I have worked for the Tangier Volunteer Fire Department for 3 years and our department has dealt with Parties Etc. long before that. They provide the tents, rides, and concessions for our Homecoming each year. Up until this year, we had little reason to complain; however, this year our experience with them has been awful! We were told early on that this year they would not put their trucks on a barge to transport the equipment to Tangier.
Although inconvenient for us, I can honestly understand for insurance purposes their reasoning. This meant we would have to rent a 26' ft. U-Haul (from another store) for the Parties Etc. crew to load at their store location. Everything had been set that our crew members would go pick up the U-Haul, drop it off at Parties Etc. for them to load, and come back to drive it down to Crisfield.
When they got there, one of their sales associates told them that they would not have it finished until 3:30. (The barge was due on Tangier at 4 pm) Which meant we would not be able to bring the barge loaded with equipment until the next day. It also meant that we had rented a U-haul along with equipment from other stores a day earlier than was needed.
At first I was told that what our members told me was "not true, " but then they acknowledge that someone gave their "two cents worth when they shouldn't have"and that the U-haul had been ready much earlier than we were told. On Sunday, August 19, as part of our contract, Parties Etc. sent over crew members to come take down the tents, equipment, etc.
There were three boats leaving Tangier that day: one at 2:00 pm and two at 4:00 pm. They came over to the island and arrived at 10 am. (All boat fares were included in our contract for us to pay) They were in such a hurry to get back on the 2 pm boat that they did not finish packing the U-haul even though we paid for them to take it ALL down. Again, our crew had to finish packing equipment in the U-haul.
Several items were left behind, including their nacho machine. We arranged for the barge to leave Tangier early Monday morning because the Porta Potties (from another company) and U-haul were due back as part of our contract with those companies. After our crew arrived in Salisbury at Parties Etc., they were told that the U-Haul could not be unloaded until the next day. Again, the U-haul was arranged to be delivered on Monday and because of them, we couldn't fulfill that part of the contract.
Some may think "Well, you really can't fault Parties Etc. due to Tangier being so inconvenient. They had NO responsibility to get it on and off the island, all they had to do was to load, the U-haul, unpack on Tangier, take down on Tangier, load the U-haul, and unload it again in Salisbury. They didn't do that. We paid almost $7,000 for this. I'm not telling people not to deal with them because I'm sure others' experiences were ideal, but ours wasn't.
