One of those courses that when you play, you start to think what the heck happened here? I highly doubt this is what Palmer had in mind. Having played many Palmer designs, you can see the commonality - risk reward, bridges and waterfalls, use of angles, etc. However, course conditions were disappointing with bare areas, abundant weed overgrowth, trash bunkers, and neglected waterways.
Many of the ravines were completely overgrown, killing any sightlines and angles you used to have. Greens were in great shape, and fairways were generally nice. However they are eliminating some bunkers I think in an effort to make maintenance easier, and you can also tell they have issues with green shape creep, were the original shaping is getting lost to oversized fringe. Reminds a lot of Bridges, and Canyon Lakes.
If you like those courses, you might like this. I prefer Wente, and Poppy Ridge. Employee did say new management is trying to recondition the course - I hope that is true. Aviara is a championship Palmer course, and a perfect example of what HiddenBrooke has at its core. Please don't turn into another Canyon.

This is by far one of the best course layouts in the bay area. There is not one boring hole and each hole is unique. The fairways, tee boxes and bunkers were in good shape, and the greens were excellent. It's a relatively tough course for walking as it's quite hilly but the views make it all worth it. In the evening it starts to get very windy on the back nine which makes it a fun challenge. The gentleman in the pro shop was very friendly and helpful. This course is hard to beat and I would definitely recommend!

The course is a phenomenal layout. It is hard with narrow landing areas and many times you won't have a flat lie. Hazards line the fairways and make you be thoughtful with irons off the tees or precise driver shots. If it could be watered twice as much as it is today, the conditions would rival private courses. It is such a diamond in the rough of a golf course.
One of my favorite to play in the bay area. Walking this course is a challenge, particularly on the back with big elevation changes. Update: They really let the condition deteriorate. This might only be a good option in the spring with a lot of rain. Expect summer months to have very poor conditions.

4 Stars? Not even 1! This place is in terrible shape, I hate to say that this was once one of the best Bay Area gems, unfortunately it needs a new groundskeeper, ground crew, whatever! This neglected, flooded fairways, torn up tee boxes, diseased greens, and poor course management is plain to see. Attaching a photo of just one tee box to show you how bad this place is. Save your money, until they lower prices and fix this place, you won't see me there again!
