Lutz Continental Cafe & Pastry

I usually love supporting small businesses who have been around for decades. However, the clerk irked my in the wrong way. The time this youngish curly haired lady spent correcting me with no greeting made my trip brief. Hence, I walked out of the door with only one item rather than a sampling of their goods. I had the strawberry cream cake, not the "strawberry shortcake", which people post about.

Yes it was good but my dear, I've had better. It is light with sponge cake layers. I am not one for too sweet but his one could have used more. The strawberries weren't in their prime and the filling could be more jammy. Priced right. No parking lot. Aldi is across the street.

I stopped in today because I wanted to get some cake for dessert, and thought of the delicious strawberry whipped cream cake here. And it's been at least 7-10 years since I've been to Lutz so I thing out if stop in. They didn't have any of the cake, unfortunately. It was about an hour before close so I can see how that makes sense. Although when I was paying I saw a bunch in the cooler toward the north side of the building?. maybe those were orders, who knows.

Anyway I got a slice of Black Forest cake and chocolate mousse cake. The Black Forest was well liked by the person I bought it for, so that's great. The chocolate mousse, though. it was disappointing. I also would have preferred a more chocolate-y flavor. I would probably not get it again.

We ordered a red velvet cake which was so light, moist, and super delicious! This was my first time and will definitely go back again!

Great bakery! Whipped cream and strawberries cake is a staple here and its amazing. My favorite is the napoleon! They have a great selection and I have never been disappointed.

SERIOUSLY DELICIOUS! You must try the raspberry lemon cupcake, fruit tart, and mandarin orange roll. My boyfriend and I just DoorDashed on a whim and everything was AMAZING! I headed right to yelp to show my appreciation. You will not be disappointed! They have wonderful bakers here!

Definitely one of the best bakery in the Chicagoland area. This bakery is well known for their cake & pastries but whatever you can find in this place, you won't be disappointed. Interior is not much of fancy but definitely very cozy side and for the locals, it definitely give a feeling of being in hometown of Chicago. For sure, if you hate the seen and sense of gentrification, this is a perfect place because while this place is not fancy, the classic local feeling and definitely full of cozy old familiar mom&pop store feeling.

I might recommend the store renovation but definitely highly recommend not to change anything way they look and feel because any changes won't improve any but only loose the charm only this place has. This bakery is quite a bit pricy side of the bakery and cost efficiency wide, you might want to visit some other place. However, for the special occasions or something special, this is the to go place to have those special occasion cake or pastry.

Decent but not worth what they charge for in my opinion. just too expensive for what you get and their backed goods are average good. service is below average. not necessarily good experience. May be I will go their in a pinch but won't intentionally seek them out.

Great bakery! I go out of my way to get their Red Velvet Cupcakes! Literally the best in the city that I've found! They actually use cream cheese frosting and its cream cheese filled! Cake itself is soft and moist I'm writing this review because I'm just in love with them, but if you guys go to get the Red Velvet Cupcakes please leave one for me!

Probably the best overall legacy bakery on Chicago's North Side now that the Swedish Bakery is closed. Perfectly executed sponges, chocolate ganache cake that's not too sweet and toweringly tall. A wonderful gift or party addition. Their marzipan items are really worth trying, as are their strudels. A must-visit for those near the Lincoln Square area, but it's a bit of a walk from the train.

Their red velvet cupcakes & carrot cupcakes are good. I was shopping around because I wanted to purchase 2 dozen for my sons birthday. I also was interested in chocolate strawberries and when I called, the girl on the phone sounded annoyed. When I went in person, I was spoke to in a condescending tone and I decided to go to another bakery for my sons birthday.

Ordered on DoorDash and picked it up in the store. The cake is very good and deserves five stars. Lutz cakes have been my family's all time favorites. We like their marzipans too. My reasons to be hesitant for going in again have to do with my prior experience of having to figure out some icons on the website that does not work properly at the time of trying to place an online order and inconvenient parking near the store.

This bakery is amazing and understandably why it makes one of Chicago's best! We drove from Indiana to this bakery just to try it out and we had no regrets. We tried their donuts (not a very large selection) but what we tried were a cinnamon and a strawberry Boston cream and they may be some of the best donuts we ever tried. As for their cakes, down rite amazing! ~Well worth the trip!

This place is a must see! You feel like you're back in 1950, picking up a delicious handmade dessert that will impress even your mother in law.the staff is so friendly. The treats are endless, & last time the owner was treating all the kids to a frosted holiday cookie! Def visit here, you will be delighted.

The Strawberry Whipped Cream Torte is the best cake I've ever tasted. The whipped cream is so airy and only mildly sweet. The strawberries aren't drenched in syrup, THANKFULLY! Most of the sweetness comes from the cake itself which balances everything out perfectly and makes for a dangerously easy to eat dessert

Tasty tasty pastries! And very friendly staff. Unique desserts that you will not see in other bakeries. Super grateful I stopped by for a box of sweet treats!

We ordered a fall celebration cake for a family party. Unbelievably delicious and so beautiful.

Price, excellent flavor would certainly try these desserts very rich 100% recommended.

Absolutely stellar. Came here specifically to find sacher torte. Left with just that and a slice of dark chocolate cake. The best sacher torte I've yet to have! The dark chocolate cake was similarly incredible. Dark chocolate ganache coated a light chocolate mousse covering three layers of moist, dark chocolate cake. Unlike most cakes this surprisingly wasn't too sweet--it was perfect. Sacher torte had two layers of apricot jam, a rich chocolate cake base, and a beautiful dark chocolate coat.

With multiple cases of single cake slices, whole cakes, cookies, quick breads, and pastries, you're bound to find many treats to love. With COVID the small dining area and restrooms are currently closed. That was a bummer. Quick and friendly service. Very fair prices.

Ordered one of their cake slices, and while the cake portion was moist, the whole thing was mostly flavorless. It's clear that vegetable shortening was subbed in a lot here. For how expensive this bakery is, I'll stick to the French bakery closer to my home that actually tastes like butter and cream and doesn't leave that weird coating in my mouth.

The pastries from here were interesting and very diverse! The mandarian roll was incredibly soft and creamy. It had subtle flavors and wasn't too sweet. The carrot cake cupcake was my favorite. The cream was so tasty and sweet and the cake part was moist and thick. The moca moose cake had a strong coffee flavor that was too overpowering for me. Overall, definitely a quality bakeshop!

Please check your cake before you buy. There were mold on the fruits the cake tasted bad. I took it back to the store and they give me refund with an attitude and they did not care. They said the whole country is having fruit deficit!

The orange roll is AMAZING. I tried 4 cakes and none of them disappointed. I love this place

I'm not going to lie. We went there hungry, just wanting a little snack, and because everything looked so good, we wound up spending like $65 on pastries. I'm pretty sure my MyCarbManager app exploded after that. Here's my breakdown: Butter cookies - YES, YES, YES! They sell them in either a 1/2 lb or 1 lb package. Go for the 1 lb. They're delicious. Can't get enough of these.

They were absolutely, by far, the best thing we got. Apple strudel - I expected it to be my favorite of everything we bought, but it was actually my least favorite. Tasted vaguely like vegetable oil. Strawberry cake - Very good! The frosting wasn't overly sweet, and the cake itself was moist and delicious. It did get to be a bit much, though, and I couldn't finish the whole slice. Plain cheesecake - Very good! NOTE - Right now, their seating area, including the patio, are closed.

I have been going here for 50 years and they are wonderful! I had my wedding cake made by them too, Suggestion get extra we did and so many folks went back for a second peice of cake I had to share mine with my new hubby! Also they made us a free cake for our 1 year anniversary so we didn't eat year old frozen cake! Honestly one of the best bakeries in town!

I ordered a 10 black-forest cake and the chocolate cream was hard As a rock and crumbly! When you charge $60 for a cake it better be fresh not out of the freezer so disappointed we're been ordering cake from lutz Bakeary go over 20 years. It's time to find another bakery for us.

I've been getting birthday cakes from here for the past couple years and every time I tell myself I'll pre-order a cake instead of just going in the day of to pick one. Luckily for me, Lutz always has a good selection of pre-made cakes so I can pop in easily, pick one, and go. I've tried many varieties of cakes and they're all delicious. My favorite is the mocha one. I don't know the actual name of it but it's really delicious. Reminds me a tiramisu cake.

This cute bakery is on the Montrose avenue right opposite Aldi. We walked in close to their closing time(7pm) wanting to eat cake and we weren't disappointed! My husband and I ordered their chocolate mousse cake and red velvet cupcake. Both of them were fresh, tasty and perfect! Not too sweet, just the way we like it. They have friendly staff.

They offer a variety of celebration cakes, pastries and savouries. I'd love to go back and try their other varieties soon! When the sugar craving kicks in I'd rather run here and get a slice of cake than buy a whole cake from any of the supermarkets that were made God knows when with a ton of preservatives!

Excellent cookies & cupcakes. My Dad got my wedding cake here. Such great memories.

Wife and I had to stop for our 20th Anniversary. Our wedding cake was made here. Still here, still AMAZING!! If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Bought one of every torte available and we are savoring them for like 2 days...maybe
