Any of the reviews that are above 1 star, must have come from employees who were paid to do so. Although the service is so terrible, one would think this establishment has no employees. If you are truly interested in wasting your money, do NOT book a reservation. Show up to this place and ask to see and INSPECT the room prior to paying. you will find that there are a million better ways to waste your money.

We were welcomed to the Powers Mansion when stranded in Auburn during the Christmas snow storm. It is a wonderful place to stay with a delicious breakfast served each morning. Alfred the owner is a delightful and welcoming host. I cannot recommend the Powers Mansion too highly as a great choice to spend a few days. We will stay there again!

Not the lap of luxury, per se, but a pretty nice stay. If you want a truly historic room/experience, this fits the bill, and it was comfortable enough. The owner cooked up an excellent breakfast - that was the best part (tasty mini quiche, sausage, and more. the fresh-baked blueberry scones were fantastic.) He also texted us a little "guide" of local sights to see, like a little itinerary of where to go and what to do. The price isn't bad, considering what you get.

A truly historic Inn in the center of historic Auburn, Ca. Our family is new to the Auburn area and fascinated by the rich history. During our first stays here, we spent a night at the Power's Mansion Inn. 137 years old this year (by my reckoning), it was built by one of the first Gold Mining tycoons. These days it is owned and operating by Alfred Lee and his family. Alfred is one of the most genuinely nice, and honest, and hard working folks you will ever meet!
His youngest son is working with him to carry on the family business. The Inn is a regular site for romantic getaways and weddings. Historic Inns might not be the first choice for some who prefer modern, but if you have dreamed of spending the night in a true piece of Victorian artistry, this is the place! Spend some time in the California Gold Rush!
I hope you get a chance to talk with Alfred and learn some of his amazing story. He could easily write a great book about his life. We guarantee you will love him. He is that kind of friendly!

I stayed here with my boyfriend the weekend after valentines day. The owners were great and checking in was simple. The room looked exactly how it did in the images, we were really pleased. The sheets, towels and bathroom were clean, and the mansion was huge- and adorable. We played chess in the empty common area after we got back from dinner and drinks.
They serve breakfast and coffee in the morning, both of which were very good. I highly recommend, especially for the price. Side note, the decorations are a little over the top and its a little dusty. If youre critical of these things this may not be the place for you

Caretaker Alfred has singlehandedly pulled an old mansion back to life with his thoughtful care and loving attention. He provides an incredible experience for his guests with impeccable food, amazing cleanliness, and great conversation. From his shining gazebo and pavilion to the hand laid rock pathways down to the trickling pond, this venue is the perfect for any occasion. Thank you for helping us make our 24th Anniversary wonderful

I enjoyed our stay so much because we talked with the host, Alfred, and got to know about his life and the home. This feels like an authentic bed & breakfast- an old home, tons of Knick knacks, quiet. Conversations with other people during a homemade breakfast. I love the odd details that make Powers Mansion way more interesting than staying in a hotel. The room was so clean and comfortable. Thank you Alfred!

Extremely charming old Victorian ideally located in the middle of Auburn. Very clean and well take care of. Charismatic owner will entertain you and even cook breakfast. I have stayed here dozens of times while on business trips to nearby Sacramento. Very worthwhile and a much better alternative to the other hotels in the area. Highly recommended.

My husband and I spent 4 nights here while at a conference. It was a great experience. We enjoyed the ambiance and feeling like we were back in the early 1900s. It is not particularly luxurious or anything but very clean and comfortable. Alfred was a wonderful host and we truly appreciated his hospitality. Not only were his breakfasts delicious (his chef training SHOWS), but we had to miss breakfast on our last day and asked if he was able to prepare something for us "to go".
He went above and beyond to meet this request which we were so amazed by. Additionally, my husband and I are both vegetarian/plant-based and he accommodated us without a problem. We loved the vegan sausage! Thanks Alfred for everything!

We booked a reservation back in March and unfortunately our plans were changed by the COVID shelter in place restrictions. So, we contacted the owner to see if we could either cancel or change our reservation dates. Alfred was no longer answering his phone nor did he return any of my messages. After a few weeks I gave up and figured maybe he had to close the business for a time.
However he still should have got in touch with his customers even if a refund was not an option. However, based off of customer reviews I know that he has remained opened during COVID. So, I thought I would give him another try being several months had passed but still he is unreachable and unwilling to return my messages. Not only was I giving him the benefit of the doubt but I was still willing to work something out and even try booking a future reservation. He has lost our business but this is not the last time he will be hearing from us.

This place is absolutely awesome under the care of Alfred! He is the best host one can ask for - making us delicious breakfast, recommending great sightseeing opportunities and even taking time from his days to drive us to and from the train station! The inn was cozy and beautiful, showing how much effort he has put in to make us feel at home. Lastly, the location is super - right in the center of everything!

The Power's Mansion Inn is absolutely wonderful! Each room has its own theme. The caretaker owner Alfred Lee is absolutely wonderful! You can see how much he loves this home in the way he shares her history and the way he lovingly cares for it. He also serves a fantastic breakfaI'm already looking forward to our next stay!

I really loved this place! The atmosphere is fun, we sat by the fire it was romantic and wonderful mini get away. The only thing that was a little tough for me is I have back problems due to an accident and the bed was not super comfortable for me but my boyfriend thought it was comfortable so if you don't have back problems you will probably be just fine.
That is the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. The overall experience was great though! The owner Alfred is very kind and he made the most wonderful breakfast in the morning and came out to speak to us and I was fascinated to hear the history of this place. I would definitely recommend this for a romantic get away for couples.

This is a phenomenal bed and breakfast. Alfred, the owner, was incredibly nice and helpful. The room we stayed in was very cozy and there is a really nice fire place in the living room downstairs. The breakfast we had was absolutely superb. The breakfast quiche and homemade biscuits were just the best. We will be coming back for sure. A really wonderful bed and breakfast.

This was such a hidden gem to find tucked away in Placer County. We celebrated my boyfriend's birthday and we had the best time. The owner Alfred was so sweet, we are so impressed by his hospitality. He made us the best breakfast (he even accommodated my gluten free diet) and had so much history to share on the property. We loved that our room still had the historical feel to it. Overall an incredible experience. We will definitely come again!

This was such a quaint little place to stay. We had a wedding in forest hill to go to and stayed here the night before! Alfred was super awesome allowing us to check in early and check out a little late so we didn't have to rush to any of the festivities! The breakfast was killer and the ambience was truly awesome! Thank you so much!

The grounds are beautiful! The rooms are fantastic. Alfred was pleasant, professional, friendly and attentive. He helped us solve a reservation issue I messed up and he saved the weekend! We will definitely be staying here again and I can't wait to stay in each themes room. Oh! And the breakfast was delicious. Thanks Alfred!

My daughter brought me her for Mother's Day weekend. Alfred the proprietor is so gracious and welcoming it was like going to a family home. The rooms were beautifully decorated, our room a sunken tub! Sunday morning he served breakfast buffet style with biscuits and gravy, mini frittatas, potatoes and more. Everything was delicious and plentiful. The Inn is beautifully decorated beautifully inside and out. We are making this our Mother's Day tradition!

The building is charming but the place is run down and dirty. Breakfast is in another building and nothing special, scrambled eggs and bacon. Half and half for coffee curdled. Alfred, while very nice, talked too much. Even tho we had a bad experience the first time we decided to give them a second try a couple years later, as they are the only place we found within walking distance of old town Auburn.
We live over the mountain in Nevada. Two days before our visit a massive snow storm was about to hit. Knowing this was late notice we called Alfred to cancel our one night stay and booked a two night stay later in the year. Alfred agreed but never returned our money. We called numerous times with no return calls. We will never be back.

This was my wife and my first time experiencing a Bed and Breakfast in the states and we were impressed. From the second we walked up from the private parking lot to the Victorian Mansion we were warmly greeted by owner and operator Alfred. We both felt welcomed and overwhelmed with the beauty of this home. Alfred made us feel like a family member and gave us a tour of his beautiful home and it's history. Power's Mansion is adorned with so many antique pieces and trinkets that you might initially mistake it for a museum.
Each of the rooms have a theme; we had the lighthouse room which was fully decorated in the lighthouse theme. The breakfast was hearty for travelers with tons of carbs, and I loved their quiche. Alfred sets a beautiful atmosphere with music and lighting. We were treated to outstanding hospitality! Alfred went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and memorable.
His stellar recommendations to visit the iconic parks and sights in and around Auburn were greatly appreciated. Power's Mansion is over 120 years old so it's not perfect but is very charming and we would definitely go back again.

I particularly liked this place due to the ambience there. The house is old, large and sits on a hill top. It's like going back in time. It's a Victorian Mansion owned, managed, and (He's also the cook!) by Alfred Lee a very friendly and in the other reviews he is termed a "Treasure". I agree with that assessment. Ask him how the Mansion got to be on top of the hill, it's a good story.
My grandmother owned the Mchenry Mansion in Modesto back in the fifties and I was taken back in time to memories of that period of my life. Places like this are so rare these days, so Take advantage of an opportunity to try something different. It is not what I would term luxurious, but it is clean, the water is hot with good pressure, the rooms are cozy and you get to step into the past with out breaking the bank!

Stayed at Power's Mansion Inn this past weekend for our second visit. It was wonderful again! It is within walking distance to dining and bars of downtown Aubern. Comfy beds, warm heaters, clean facilities, beautiful Victorian decor. The best part of our stay, was waking up to a delicious breakfast, coffee, and juice by the fireplace. We will be back!

If there was a way to leave no stars or minus stars, that would be more appropriate for this place. A friend and I arrived yesterday after driving 8 hours to get here. We arrived a little after 5, and no one was at the reception area. Two resident ladies helped us out by calling the very pregnant new receptionist, who happened to also be working at the Power Club, owned by the same man who owns the Inn.
She soon arrived and led us through the kitchen and upstairs to our room (number 5 - the Irish Immigrant room). I was appalled when she opened the door, and I tried to disguise my horror. It is a jam-packed room with no chair, the armoire (with no hangers and only a few hooks) that cannot be easily accessed because the old TV and stand are just inches away.
The leaning sink is right inside the door, which someone had tried to pry into at some point. One has to climb three steps to use the non-private, leaking toilet, and another five steps to access the ancient claw-foot "spa" tub, surrounded only by a filthy shower curtain (see pictures). Again, no privacy whatsoever, as you can look over the room during your unsafe shower.
There are two smoke alarms in the room - one on the wall without a battery, and one on the ceiling that does not work. The two fire extinguishers I saw were checked last March 2015. Since this is a 140 year old wooden building, with no posted evacuation signs anywhere, I do not feel safe at all. I checked the filter on the small window air conditioner and it was filthy.
It was also extremely dirty and dusty under the plastic side table by the bed. I am afraid to pick up the mattress, but you can almost read a newspaper through the thin sheets. The wallpaper is peeling away, and various cheap, ugly round wall plates cover various problems on the brick projection (chimney?). The room lighting is terrible. There are two long, narrow windows in the room, with shades covering them that cannot easily or completely be raised. Bizarre pictures are scattered about the room, further adding to the clutter and lack of aesthetics. Stairs to reach the room are very narrow, steep and covered with dirty carpet.
As for the parlor downstairs, the area is very cluttered with too much antique furniture. It is dark and dreary, and the only thing missing is the dead body. The breakfast room is off the parlor and reception desk, cluttered much the same way. Breakfast was okay, served only at 9:00 AM, but the bacon and sausage were quite greasy. Uneven surfaces abound in the B&B - be careful where you walk.
This place is not handicap accessible, so don't even think about it. It is clear that this B&B/Inn has been ruefully neglected for years. You need to invest money to get money. As the owner obviously does not address the many poor reviews, I hope my review will dissuade any other victim from staying here. We have another 5 more nights to suffer, as no money will be returned for checking out early.
Plus we are here at a time (because of the Tevis Cup Endurance event, for which we are volunteering) when there are no vacancies in the immediate area. It is a shame this once-beautiful and historic place is rotting away with neglect. Either it needs to be closed down (by the health or fire department) or someone with considerable wealth take it over and turn it around.
Please contact me personally and I can fill you in on more. Meanwhile, I am contemplating referring them to Hotel Impossible. Since I am unable to load pictures at this time, I am posting this link to my Google Photos: https://goo.gl/photos/NHWphz32NHwrf53B7
